Erin Munley LEO Internship 6/20/00 Brief History of Lower Saucon Township -"Lower Saucon Township extends below Bethlehem and Hellertown on the south. First settled around 1720 as part of Bucks County, it later became a township in 1742, later dividing into Upper (now in Lehigh County) and Lower. It originally was known as Saucon Township, a derivation from the Indian word Sakunk meaning at the mouth of the creek." (Almanac of Bethlehem Pennsylvania by The Bethlehem Globe Times pg. 172 - Bethlehem Room) -"Saucon was erected a township of Bucks County in 1742, and originally included Upper Saucon, now in Lehigh County. The division was effected in 1743." (History of Northampton County Pennsylvania - vol. II - by William J. Heller pg. 464 - Bethlehem Room) *Predominately German settlers during the beginning of formation of Saucon Township - "The township was originally bounded on the north by the Lehigh River, on the east by Williams Township, on the southeast by Bucks County, and on the southwest by Upper Saucon, Lehigh County. The Borough of South Bethlehem, on the northwest, was detached from it in 1865, and Hellertown, in the center, was incorporated in 1872."
