Lower Saucon Township

Several different types of tax records from Northampton County are located in the Northampton County Archives Building in Easton, PA. The records begin in the year 1792 and get progressively more complex and detailed over time. The naming of the tax records from Lower Saucon Township changes slightly between different years. In 1820, the tax records from this area are referred to as "Lower Saucon Township," but by 1830, the records are referred to as just "Saucon Township." Both sets of records are organized into categories listing the resident’s name, the resident’s occupation, and the dollar and cent amount for which they were taxed. At the end of each set of records, the non-residents of the area are also listed. We can assume that both sets of records refer to the area of Lower Saucon Township and that the records called "Saucon Township" do not include Upper Saucon Township (part of Lehigh County).

In 1820 (for "Lower Saucon Township"), 367 residents and 40 non-residents are listed. In 1830 (for "Saucon Township), 478 residents and 42 non-residents are listed. These figure show that the population grew slightly over the span of these 10 years. The records from 1830, which are just called "Saucon Township," don’t include Upper Saucon Township because this area was part of Lehigh County and the non-residents from Lehigh County are also listed in the records from1830.

Breakdown of non-resident lists:

1830 16 5 21
