Seismic Station: Seismometer and Casing

The casing had to be cleared of all debris before the seismometer was placed in the ground. This is vital in

assuring that the instrumentis level and can correctly interpret the data it records.

The seismometer casing rests on a cement slab on bedrock about six feet below the surface. It consists of two PVC pipes placed inside one another with

insulation in between. Extra precautions must be taken to assure that no water can reach the instrumentation once the cap has been sealed. Once in the ground the

seismometer is leveled and positioned to line up with north. The picture on the right shows the casing with insulation before the seismometer was reinstalled.

The picture on the left shows the seismometer temporarily placed in only the outer pipe.
