Sampling Sites

These 3 sites where chosen due to the fact that they are with in the same general region and have similar climatic properties. There was also scientific communication and cooperation established at all three sites prior to the running of this experiment. Though it is assumed that all sites have approximately the same climactic properties it is important to note that forest composition differs as well as localized weather patterns at each.

The Lacawac Sanctuary RR 1, Box 518 Lake Ariel, PA 18436

The Sanctuary was established in 1966 by L. Arthur Watres and Mrs. Reyburn Watres as a not-for-profit private foundation, having as an objective the preservation of Lake Lacawac and its watershed. This private 500 acre preserve in Northeastern Pennsylvania is devoted to research, public education, and conservation. Within its confines the Sanctuary supports diverse aquatic and terrestrial habitats including a 52 acre natural lake.

Directions:
From Interstate 84

  • I-84 passes through central Pennsylvania. Take I-84 to exit 6 (Wallenpaupack, Greentown, Route 507).

  • Go right at the bottom of the exit ramp onto 507 N (See Map below). Continue on 507 N uphill for 0.5 mile (past the Whistle Stop convenience store on left, and John's Restaurant on right).

  • Turn left near the crest of the hill onto Ledgedale Road (just after Realtor on left).

  • Follow the instruction in the "From Lehigh" section below, starting with Ledgedale Road.

  • From Lehigh:

  • Take 378 N to 22 E to 33 N to 80 W to exit 44; turn left at end of ramp on 611 N. [To avoid construction on 22 and 33 take 512 N to 33 N]
Go about 6 miles on 611 to Mt. Pocono and bear to right at traffic light near Burger King onto 196 N. Take 196 about 7 miles to stop sign.

  • Continue on 196 (423 bears right from the stop sign). After another 4 miles turn right at stop sign onto 507 N.

  • Take 507 N for 3 miles to stop sign where it joins 191. Turn left to continue on 507/191 for 1.5 miles to the point where 191 and 507 split (just past Dutch's Market).

  • Bear right on 507 N. Proceed 2.5 miles on 507 N to Interstate 84 (See Map above). Stay on 507 N through the underpass, then uphill for 0.5 mile (past the Whistle Stop convenience store on left, and John's Restaurant on right).

  • Turn left near the crest of the hill onto Ledgedale Road (just after Realtor on left). Ledgedale road winds downhill for ~ 2 miles (take care with two sharp downhill turns posted 15 mph), past the Ledgedale recreation area, across a bridge, to a stop sign where you turn right. You will now start winding around the southwest end of Lake Wallenpaupack to get to Lacawac.

  • After 1 mile bear right at fork onto St. Mary Church Rd, go over bridge and almost immediately uphill around a sharp left bend.

  • Take a sharp (somewhat blind) right turn in the middle of this uphill bend onto Lacawac Rd. This will bring you past a marina. You'll have a nice view of the big lake (Wallenpaupack) on your right

  • Go right on the SECOND road after the marina, at the Lacawac sign. You will be on a dirt road that leads past several private homes to Lacawac Sanctuary. Follow this dirt road through the stone and wrought iron entrance, past the Nature Trail parking area and Director's house, and on to the Lodge at the end. On the way you may pass some forbidding signs to discourage wayward tourists, and the Watres House (brick ranch on the right before reaching the Lodge).
  • South Mountain

Follow the Directions on Lehigh's Home Page

After following the directions on the Lehigh University page, When you turn onto Memorial Drive West, instead of turning into Alumni Memorial Building, continue straight. Follow Memorial Drive West until you come across a red brick building on your right, it is less than 1/4 of a mile.
