Lehigh River
Water Trail Project

Developing a
detailed river information system for the benefit of Lehigh
River leisure pursuit
|
LEO is working with the Wildlands Conservancy
to create an information system to provide boaters of
all skill levels with information necessary for safe passage.
The Wildlands Conservancy is a non-profit organization
dedicated to preserving precious land, keeping our waterways
healthy, teaching the community about nature, and caring
for orphaned or injured wildlife. This information includes
river features such as obstructions, suggested route,
riffles/rapids, islands, hydraulics & waves, bridges
and roads (crossing the river), buoys, and visible landmarks.
In addition they hope to provide detailed descriptions
of twenty-one river access points stretching from White
Haven to Easton. Boaters will be able to use the information
system to determined desired put-in and take-out points
along the river based on access point difficulty, capacity,
attractions (historic sites, picnic and playground facilities),
river mileage, etc. LEO interns have been helping produce
maps using GPS and GIS technologies as well as formating
text and pictures for both on-line and hard copy instruction.
When completed an interactive system will be available
on-line to help users of the river plan trips and navigate
the Lehigh River safely.
