Abstract:
This data set consists of federally owned land polygon
features of
the United States. The data set was created by extracting
federal
land polygon features from the individual 1:2,000,000-scale
State
boundary Digital Line Graph (DLG) files produced by the
U.S. Geological
Survey. These files were then appended into a single
coverage. This is a
revised version of the June 1998 data set. There may be
private
inholdings within the boundaries of Federal Lands in this
data set.
Purpose:
These data are intended for geographic display and
analysis at the national level, and for large regional
areas. The data should be displayed and analyzed at scales
appropriate for 1:2,000,000-scale data. No responsibility
is assumed by the U.S. Geological Survey in the use of
these data.
Supplemental_Information:
Atlas of the United States, at scales smaller than
1:4,850,000 the data is thinned for display purposes. For
scales between 1: 4,850,000 and 1:22,000,000, dams are only
shown if they have a height of 500 feet or more, or a
normal storage capacity of 50,000 acre-feet or more, or a
maximum storage capacity of 250,000 acre-feet or more (1173
dams). At scales smaller than 1:22,000,000, dams are only
shown if they have a height of 5000 feet or more, or a
normal storage capacity of 500,000 acre-feet or more, or a
maximum storage capacity of 2,500,000 acre-feet or more
(240 dams).

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Using ESRI's Arc/INFO GIS software, the data set was
checked for label
errors, dangling nodes, and intersections. Polygon topology
was built for
the data set using the "BUILD" command.
Attribute_Accuracy: accuracy of the Digital Line Graphs was
tested by one or more of the
following methods: 1) manual comparison of the source with
hard copy
plots, 2) symbolized display of the digital line graph on
an interactive
computer graphic system, 3) selected attributes that could
not be visually
verified on plots or on screen were interactively queried
and verified on
screen. The DLG files were directly converted to Arc/INFO
coverages, so
attributes have not been checked in the Arc/INFO format.
Completeness_Report:
Not all coal related problems are included inthe inventory.
In most cases, States and Indian tribes are responsible for
finding problems and entering them into the Abandoned Mine
Land (AML) Inventory. Some have chosen not to inventory all
their problems, especially if they have a great many
problems
already in the inventory. Also, not all damage to lands and
water by past coal mining qualifies for inclusion in the
inventory. To be included as high priority, problems must
pose a threat to human health, safety, or welfare.

There is no charge for the online option. For National Atlas files
ordered on CD-ROM there is a base price of $45.00 per disc, a handling fee
of $5.00, and a per-file charge based on file size. The charge for files
less than 10 megabytes in size is $1.00. The charge for files that range
in size from 10 to 150 megabytes is $7.50. The charge for files of 150
megabytes or larger is $15.00. The charge is $7.50 for the Federal Land
Features of the United States (polygon) data set.
