Baseball/Softball Complex The Lehigh University Athletic Department has expressed an interest in designing a new Baseball/Softball complex on the Goodman Campus. The reasons for creating this new complex are logical and innovative. At the current time, the baseball and softball fields are located on opposite ends of Goodman Campus. This setup is inconvenient for student athletes and fans, and it imposes redundant operating and staffing costs on the athletic department. Due to these inefficiencies Lehigh is studying the feasibility establishing a new complex where both fields will be closer together. In designing this new facility Lehigh has chosen to use the natural resources that it has right here on campus, its students. Lehigh has come up with a "hands on" design for students. Instead of hiring external architectural firms and engineering teams to design the complex, a team of students from a variety of different majors, have been selected to design the facility.
At the end of the semester the students will be required to present the complex that they have designed to a panel of professors, administrators, and university officials. This presentation will last approximately three hours. In addition, the students will be required to submit a report containing all of the information they have collected pertaining to the project. The report will consist of a full description of the complex including estimates, drawings, site plans, and recommendations for the complex. This gives students a chance to obtain hands on experience that they would not get in the classroom. The project improves many of the skills needed in the real world such as teamwork, communication, writing skills, and oral presentation skills. It is a great opportunity for students to get real world experience while still in school and to see their hard work come to life. If you have any comments, questions, or recommendations for the students feel free to contact Jim Marshal at (610) 758-0991 or by e-mail jema@lehigh.edu. He will be happy to direct your information to the correct group working on the project. |
