The Northeast quadrant of El Coyote Site 35 began with the excavation of axial trench 35C and continued counter clockwise to meet with the north south axial trench 35B which marks the beginning of the Northwest Quadrant. The excavation of this quadrant was for the most part straightforward. Located within the quadrant were two walls, from the south to north was "Mario Alberto" and extending from the corner of Mario Alberto at 35I/011 to the west was wall "Hugo." Excavation in the Northeast quadrant began on June 10th with the East to West Axial trench 35C. Trench 35C was 1m wide and 5m in depth. The goal of axial trench 35C was to uncover the stratigraphy of the eastern portion of Site 35, find the basal wall, the floor level, and determine if any interior walls were located in the eastern side of Site 35. Found in the axial trench of importance were various carbon deposits located near a smashed pot. In lots 35C/010-011 over 15 separate carbon deposits were excavated. Attempts to isolate the carbon deposits, and possibly piece them together to see their original context failed. Even so, these lots are still being recommended for further analysis. After completing the trench profile for 35C excavations began to uncover the north-south wall to be known as "Mario Alberto." The results of the trench profile showed a possible wall extending North out of 35C/006. Sub Operation 35I began with the goal of uncovering this wall. Unfortunately as we proceeded Northward, we found that we had nearly missed "Mario Alberto." As a result at the Northeast corner (35I/007), we moved one excavation unit in to the west and excavated to the south back towards 35C. At 35I/011 the corner of "Mario Alberto" joining it to "Hugo" was found. The excavation of Sub Operation I resulted in the uncovering of wall "Mario Alberto" After completing the excavation of "Mario Alberto," Sub Operation J was opened to excavate the adjoining wall Hugo westward from the corner to trench 35B. To begin with 35J/001 was excavated 1 lot north and west of the northern corner of Mario Alberto (35I/007) and followed by 35J/002 to the immediate west of 001. This was done so not to uncover the wall "Hugo," but to allow for working room to excavate lots 35J/003-004, which were immediately south of 35J/001-002 respectively. Notable findings, were similar fine ceramics as found in axial trench 35B. Those lots in which these fine ceramics were found are also recommended to be read. After uncovering the wall and tumble of Hugo, it was decided that another Sub Op was not necessary to open to excavate the bulk that remained in between the center of Site 35 and Axial trench 35C. Even so, a lot of ceramics, and even bone was found here. As stated earlier, the NE quadrant did not supply us with very much information much further than foundation and walls. Of interest were the carbon samples found in 35C, and the fine ceramics of 35J. Lots to Study: 35C/010, 35C/011, 35J/002, 35J/003, 35J/004, 35J/006 |
