Groundwater Monitoring

Groundwater is a precious resource that should be carefully monitored for changes in both quantity and quality. Lehigh has a cluster of three groundwater wells located on South Mountain that can be used to study fluctuations in the water table and changes in groundwater chemistry. Through the collection and analysis of seasonal and long-term data, we can gain insight into the interactions of precipitation, evapotranspiration, recharge, and runoff. Combining data from this site with data from the weather station and stream gauges, we can quantitatively evaluate the water balance and hydrologic cycle in the Lehigh Valley.

    Intern Responsibilities:
    •
Monitor water level logger and data collection systems

    • Assembly data sets from:

                           Water level logger

                           Lehigh River USGS gaging station

LEO mountain top campus weather station

                           LEO stream gage station

    • Analyze data and write report

    Requirements:
    -
Transportation from campus to North Mountain Drive
    - EES 21
    - Previous exposure to hydrogeology is helpful, but not required.

Permission of instructor required. Steve Peters
