Internships
LEO provides a range of experiential learning and research opportunities for students across the curriculum. Students can work individually, as part of a team, or participate through regularly scheduled courses that include or focus on LEO activities or make use of LEO resources and data. Students can register as LEO interns and receive credit for participating in LEO activities during the academic year. In addition, the Observatory hires paid interns to work full time over the summer. Variable credit (1-4) for academic year internships is available through EES 293. Freshmen interested in participating in LEO can receive credit through EES 93. The amount of credit is dependent on the nature of the activity and is specified in individual agreements between project advisors and students. Each credit earned requires on average 3-4 hours of work per week. In general LEO interns sign up for 1-2 internship credits per semester. Only in exceptional cases or for advanced students (students with significant LEO experience) are 3-4 credits available in a given semester. EES majors can count up to 8 credits of internship and research credits toward their EES major program. Additional internships and research credits can be used to fulfill overall credit requirements for graduation. For non-majors, credits for appropriate work can count toward science distribution requirements. Check with your academic advisor and your LEO internship advisor before filling out the on-line application to verify how your credits will be counted toward your degree.
