Environmental Change in the Deep Past.

This internship will examine the magnetic record of environmental change in the deep past. The student will collect samples from an ancient sedimentary rock and measure variations in magnetic mineral properties as a sensitive measure of changes in sediment sources and sedimentation rates. These techniques are used extensively to measure environmental change recorded by very recent lake sediments. We will apply them to ancient environments to start establishing a detailed record of environmental change several hundred million years ago. The student will use the superconducting rock magnetometer housed in Lehigh’s paleomagnetism laboratory and ancillary equipment. Sample collection using paleomagnetic field sampling equipment will also be part of this internship. Prerequisite: EES 21
