Invasive Species Project

Partnered with Wilands Conservancy and DCNR (Department of Conservation and Natural Resources), the goal of this project is to identify, survey, and control invasive plants and assist in the eventual restoration using native plants.  This project is listed as a recommendation in the Department of Conservation and Natural Resource’s Invasive Species Management Plan.  invasive plant species in this region may include: tree-of-heaven, autumn olive, multi-flora rose, oriental honeysuckle bushes, Canada thistle, garlic mustard, Japanese knotweed, mile-a-minute, purple loosestrife, and/or oriental bittersweet.  The project is taking place in nearby Jacobsburg State Park.  LEO interns will continue to add to the map, identifying the location of the invasives using GPS (Global Positioning System) and GIS (Geographical Information System).   In addition, trails, and various other park features will be mapped.  Records of control techniques and photo monitoring data will also be compiled.
